thank you, public radio
Thanks to Minnesota Public Radio’s Classical station, I have a new favourite string quartet. A few weeks ago, I heard Haydn’s String Quartet, Opus 1. I’ll tell you, even when I’m intrigued with a piece, I can usually put it at second fiddle and do something else. Not this time: I stopped what I was doing and listened. I don’t know much about Haydn, but I know that I...

“Amish tweens figured that shit out the minute KITT turned on his little whchoo...”
– Sars annoyed with the new “Knight Rider” taking 20 minutes to get to and explain KITT’s name. Hee! “whchoo whchoo” is hysterically accurate. (nb: I haven’t watched the new “Knight Rider” and I won’t need to having read Sars’ review.)

Today on "How It's Made"...
LaCrosse sticks, frozen fish products, flashlights, and paint brushes. I’m not sure I’ll want fish sticks after this episode, but I’ll stick around for it anyway. I notice the Science Discovery channel is showing the what-would-seem-to-be older versions of “How It’s Made” than those the regular Discovery channel is showing. I like both versions: the older for...

It’s been quite nice: first some Tchaikovsky, then John Williams leading the Boston Pops and on to classical guitar. Their playlist calls is a “Guitar Sonatina” by Manuel Ponce, but Google insists it’s “sonata” and won’t show anything...

audio ephemera: an introduction
I like “audio ephemera.” “All Things Considered” has a recurring segment where they explore interesting sounds based on suggestions from listeners. I’m sure there’s one explaining how the makers of Star Wars got the blasters’ sound by tapping high-tension wires, but I can’t find it. The bit that struck me today: the way Mos Def chuckles (@ :55) in...

– Polaroid Closing Instant Film Factories. I guess it had to happen eventually. Still: boo hiss! Here’s to hoping someone goes for the licensing rights. (:

Junebug
Juno It’s a good movie. I’m suspicious any 16-year-old, well-versed in her punk history or not, is that hyper-self-aware, but it’s a good movie. 3 things: Michael Cera’s appearance in the movie is way too small. It intrigued me that 2 songs were played (sung) twice. My favourite quote is Juno arguing with Brenda about the appropriateness (or lack thereof) of her...
