thank you, public radio
Thanks to Minnesota Public Radio’s Classical station, I have a new favourite string quartet.
A few weeks ago, I heard Haydn’s String Quartet, Opus 1. I’ll tell you, even when I’m intrigued with a piece, I can usually put it at second fiddle and do something else. Not this time: I stopped what I was doing and listened.
I don’t know much about Haydn, but I know that I adore this. It’s all very bright and properly classical, though by the third section (movement?), it slows down, calming the spirited strings for a few minutes. Unwilling to be quiet for too long, the strings perk right back up through the last third of the first quartet.
Lucky for me, MPR updates their live playlist, so I knew what to look for at eMusic.
Haydn String Quartets, Nos 1-4. Four?! I am ecstatic.
