Pre-release viral campaigns, by and large, suck. To the surprise of precisely no one, the one for Prometheus is excellent.

I am an unapologetic sucker for the kind of visual symmetry happening in this video (the partial skulls? Come on! Also, nice posture, sir!) and I said this to Martin, but I’ll say it here, too: Data would kill to be able to tear up like that. Fantastic.

Caveat: I haven’t seen Girls. My desire for you (yes, you!) to read the above is less about an objection to the show and more about so much word to the point Jenna Wortham is making here.

My chief beef is not simply that the girls in Girls are white. I’m a white girl and not a white girl, identified by other people as black and not black for as long as I can remember – which, in mixed people speak means biracial. But the problem with Girls is that while the show reaches — and succeeds, in many ways — to show female characters that are not caricatures, it feels alienating, a party of four engineered to appeal to a very specific subset of the television viewing audience, when the show has the potential to be so much bigger than that. And that is a huge fucking disappointment.

I heard it asked once, “why does it always have to be about race?”

And the thing is… it doesn’t. Except that it kind of always is when we’re talking about popular media. It may be hard to understand from the other side of it, but that doesn’t mean it’s dismissable.

Don’t miss “Hunger Games in austere times”, which Subashini quotes at the beginning, but it’s this bit from Subashini that rocked me back on my heels a little even though it’s not… what, surprising? new? Still.

Anyway, this seems to tie in to what Voyou pointed out: the decadence of the Capitol expressed through the “visual form of feminization”. This also somehow hints at the subtle underlying factor about what makes Katniss a “worthy” poor person – she is, ultimately a very pretty woman, even if it’s achieved through artifice (i.e. Boy, doesn’t she clean up nice! etc.). The markers of femininity, or what makes a girl worthy, still seem depressingly familiar: pretty, vulnerable, likeable, charming, and most of all, “desirable” (in general) and desired by a man (in particular).
